Cardiff may see 800 environmentally friendly homes built in Pontprennau, which will create Wales' first eco village. Within the proposed village will be a school, shops, community centre and woodland area. All of this will be situated on farmland to the east of the suburb of Pontprennau, next to the River Rhymney.It is thought the houses will use 30% less energy than your typical home. Green technologies will be incorporated in the design stage of the homes which include in between two and five bedroom houses. Some of the green technologies will include rainwater harvesting, wind turbines, ground source heat pumps and hot water solar panels. The proposed estate covers 60 acres of a 100 acre site but maybe in doubt because of differences between Cardiff Council and the Assembly Government Inspectors over the Local Development Plan. The LDP judges how Cardiff will develop until 2021.The main difference between the two is that Cardiff Council wants to develop on previously developed brownfield sites therefore keeping and retaining Cardiff's green areas. However the Assembly Government Planning Inspectors disagree instead believing that due to Cardiff's need for housing for the law and middle income families who cannot find affordable homes, previous untouched greenfield sites are the only viable option.The developers PMG, part of the St Ederyns Land Consortium, see the eco village as something which will be in Cardiff for generations. If the development does go ahead then it will stretch from junction 30 of the M4 to the edge of the village of Llanederyn. Due to the severe shortage of homes in Cardiff, the development does serve its purpose and links in with the idea of more eco-friendly housing for the city. It also has the benefit of having excellent transport links.

He has done all of this so that he does not receive the opposition to the project that other such developments have gotten. Local opposition ended one such scheme in Long Marston in Warwickshire and the tennis player Tim Henman led protests against an eco town in Weston-on-the-Green in Oxfordshire which led to the scheme being abandoned. The schemes that are going ahead have local backing rather than opposition.Bicester has an Eco Development Masterplan which has outlined its first 74million phase which will last ten years in its entirety. Initial developments will see 393 homes being built and a large energy centre which will generate much of the new village's power. There will also be a nursery, community centre, primary school, three shops, some small business units and an "eco-pub". The councils and companies involved with this development have linked up with the Co-op to provide a store which will source supplies locally. They also plan to run eco-related courses at the local college aimed at the 16 years and over. The architect behind the scheme, Terry Farrell, describes the scheme as a model for sustainable development in the UK.Cambridge and Devon both have schemes in the pipeline but the big volume builders will not be participating in any of these schemes. The infrastructure costs of these eco-villages are huge and the roads and utilities have to be done up front before any houses are built so they rely on the landowners selling at below market value but which may pay big dividends if the schemes are successful.
